The Path to Membership
Find a Lodge
Attend a Meeting or Event
Contact the lodge and ask about visiting a meeting or attending a public event. This gives you a chance to meet members, ask questions, and get a feel for the lodge culture before committing.
Submit an Application
If you decide to join, you'll fill out a membership application. A current member will need to propose you for membership and another will second your application.
Interview Process
A committee from the lodge will meet with you to discuss your interest in joining and answer any questions you may have. This is an informal, friendly conversation.
Lodge Vote
The lodge members will vote on your application. If approved (as most applications are), you'll be invited to join and begin your journey as an Odd Fellow.
Ceremonial Initiation
Experience a sacred initiation ceremony that reveals the fundamental principles of Odd Fellowship through time-honored ritual. This profound ceremony, performed for over two centuries, marks your entry into our ancient Order and your beginning as a brother or sister in the fraternal chain.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does membership cost?
Membership fees vary by lodge but are typically modest. There's usually an initiation fee and annual dues. Contact your local lodge for specific information. The investment in membership is far outweighed by the friendships and experiences you'll gain.
How much time is required?
The time commitment is flexible. At minimum, attending regular lodge meetings (usually 1-2 per month) is expected. Additional activities, service projects, and leadership roles are available for those who wish to be more involved, but are not required.
Is the IOOF a secret society?
No, we are not a secret society—we are a society with secrets. Our existence and activities are public, but like many fraternal organizations, we have certain ceremonies and traditions that are shared only among members. This creates a special bond and sense of belonging.
Can women join?
Yes! The IOOF has welcomed women since 1851 through our Rebekah Lodges, making us one of the first major fraternal organizations to include women. Today, many lodges are fully integrated, and women can join either traditional or Rebekah lodges.
What if I move to a different area?
Your membership in the IOOF travels with you! If you move, you can transfer your membership to a lodge in your new area, or even visit lodges while traveling. The bonds of Odd Fellowship extend worldwide.
